Intuitive Eating is Trust

Do you ever question your body’s cues? These cues may be subtle or not-so-subtle; they could be related to hunger, food choice, movement or any message your body is trying to share with you. If you answered yes, it may be interesting to explore what trust in your body feels like to you.

Intuitive eating is trust. It is trusting your body will guide you.

If we lean into the inner wisdom of our bodies, we can learn a lot. In order to hear these wise messages we must have trust in our bodies. Intuitive eating helps you build this trust, so you can tap into that inner wisdom; it can guide your food choices during the day, the amount of food you eat, and it can even guide what movement feels good to you.

The practice of intuitive eating and trusting our body, gets us out of our heads and into our bodies.

It can be helpful to think of your relationship with your body just like any other relationship you may have with another person. What words come to mind when you think of a healthy relationship or friendship? Perhaps you listed some of these words: respect, listen, grateful, honour. Let’s see how these qualities also relate to our own body relationship and trust.

Steps you can take to build trust between you and your body includes respecting your body. Speak to yourself the way you would speak to a dear friend. Listen to your body; working with a Registered Dietitian can be helpful to discover what this looks like for you. Practice gratitude for the body you are in right now. Honour the subtle and not-so subtle cues your body is giving you. These cues could look like a grumble in your stomach, a craving for a particular food, irritability, or changes in your bowel routine. The body has many different ways of showing you what you need to live a well-nourished and full life.

We are born trusting our bodies. We cry when we are hungry, we sleep when we are tired, and we move when it feels good. However, as we grow up, we begin to receive messages that tell us our bodies are not to be trusted, yet, trust is what can help cultivate a peaceful relationship with our bodies and food.

In the year 2021, are you ready to embrace trusting your body?
